Expunge Colorado, Annual Evening

UNITE
FOR JUSTICE.

One evening. Two hours. The lawyers and judges who can clear a record, in the same room as the volunteers who do it every clinic. Let's uplift pro bono work in Colorado and expand access to record sealing and expungement. Thursday, June 11, 2026.

The Mission

We exist to enable people to move forward from their criminal records.

Expunge Colorado is a BIPOC-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit sealing eligible records for Coloradans through three pillars: education, advocacy, and pro bono legal services. Eight years of clinics. One annual evening to advance the mission, and a waitlist of 300+ people counting on what comes next.

The Impact

Three numbers. Eight years.

01, The scale

1.3M

Coloradans living with a record that may be eligible to seal.

Nationally, 1 in 3 Americans carries a record. In Colorado, the figure is 1.3 million people, and the collateral consequences (housing, employment, licensure, mental health, custody) extend long after a sentence ends. For many who have left Colorado, that record crossed state lines with them, still blocking opportunity wherever they live now.

02, The work

250 records. 600 lives.

Since 2018, Expunge Colorado has run free clinics across the Denver Metro, serving more than 600 Coloradans and sealing over 250 records. Every petition is reviewed by an attorney. Every applicant pays nothing.

03, The room

75

like-minded people. By invitation only. Hand-curated by the host committee.

The guest list is small on purpose. We want a room where the managing partner who can authorize ten pro bono hours sits next to the volunteer who has filed forty petitions, and the conversation that follows turns into next year's prepared clinic calendar.

Members of the bar, in-house counsel, and the bench are warmly considered.

The Night

Three pillars. One evening.

  1. Pillar 01, Education

One short story you have not heard.

Hear from one client whose record was sealed in one of our past clinics, in their own words. No panel. No podium. No video reel.

  2. Pillar 02, Advocacy

    Two voices on what's next.

Executive Director Melanie Rose Rodgers on the future of Expunge Colorado, then Brett Landis from Colorado Access to Justice Commission highlighting their new pro bono portal. Ten minutes, both.

  3. Pillar 03, Pro Bono

    The sign-on table.

Two clinics in 2026: Denver and Colorado Springs. More programs coming in 2026–2027 that need legal volunteers. A clipboard, a pen, and your year's calendar. Multiple ways to be an example of justice and change lives.

A voice

The hours I gave at a clinic last fall changed how I talk about pro bono inside the firm. Twelve thousand collateral consequences can fall away with one petition. The most meaningful work I've ever done doesn't appear on my billable hours. It appears on someone's clean record.
